A draft is a complete version of a manuscript at any stage of the writing process, from the raw first attempt through the final polished version submitted for publication. The concept of drafts is fundamental to how professional writers understand their craft: writing is not a single act of creation but a series of progressive refinements, each draft serving a different purpose and bringing the work closer to its final form. The first draft is for discovery—finding out what the story is. The second draft is for structure—reorganizing, cutting, and reshaping. Subsequent drafts address increasingly fine-grained concerns: character consistency, prose rhythm, dialogue authenticity, and finally, mechanical correctness. Understanding this staged process liberates writers from the paralyzing expectation that any single sitting should produce finished prose.

Ernest Hemingway famously declared that "the first draft of anything is shit," a sentiment that has been both comfort and rallying cry for generations of writers. Anne Lamott codified this philosophy in Bird by Bird with her concept of "shitty first drafts," arguing that all good writers produce terrible initial versions and that the willingness to write badly is a prerequisite for writing well. Raymond Carver's stories went through dozens of drafts, many of them heavily shaped by his editor Gordon Lish. Donna Tartt spent a decade drafting and redrafting The Goldfinch, while James Baldwin reportedly rewrote Giovanni's Room so many times he lost count. These examples demonstrate that the number of drafts varies enormously between writers, but the principle of iterative refinement is universal.

The practical key to effective drafting is understanding what each draft should accomplish and resisting the urge to address every concern simultaneously. In the first draft, prioritize completion over quality—a finished imperfect manuscript is infinitely more valuable than a perfect first chapter. In the second draft, focus on structural issues: does the plot work, are the characters consistent, is the pacing effective? Save line-level concerns for later drafts, because there is no point in polishing prose that may be cut during structural revision. Label your drafts clearly, keep previous versions accessible, and set time between drafts to gain fresh perspective. Each pass through the manuscript should have a specific focus, and you should declare each draft complete before moving to the next, resisting the temptation to endlessly tinker without progressing.
